Listen to What I Say... But Not What I Said
Maybe that is what good ol' Rick wants everybody to do. First he says "The issue in this race is not the economy.," but the real issue is "because we have a government that is oppressing its people and taking away their freedom." And that is important now! (HuffingtonPost.com)
So, he wants the government out of people's lives. That makes sense. Except... when it comes to certain 'social issues' that Mr. Santorum wants the government right in the middle of. Things like abortion and birth control. He wants people to be able to have their freedom, unless it comes at the cost of something he disagrees with. The right to choose is a freedom.
He also wants to interrupt another 'freedom'. He wants an end to pornography. He thinks the Obama Administration is 'soft' on porn. He thinks the Justice Department under President Obama “seems to favor pornographers over children and families.” So, let's get the government in on that! That is important now! (WashingtonPost.com)
But, it is what he says, not what he said. He didn't think that Penn State was soft on pedophilia in the Sandusky case. Nor does the devout Catholic think he has to "grade the Catholic Church" on the pedophilia there. So, let's just stay out of those areas. (LezGetReal)
The one thing Rick ought to watch out for though, is who he might be intruding on in the porn area. From the NewScientist: "Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds." (TheNewCivilRightsMovement.com) So, Rick's supporters are buying the stuff.
Wonder if they will still vote for him...

Complicit in Bigotry
That is what Brent Bozell, founder and president of the Media Research Center, Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, Brian Burch, president of Catholic Vote, Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, Richard Viguerie chairman of ConservativeHQ.com, and Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council are telling the Huffington Post. (FoxNews.com)
The Conservative leaders are saying that based on a "satirical" piece written by columnist Larry Doyle about Rick Santorum's Catholic faith. "Larry Doyle's recent anti-Catholic screed in the Huffington Post, 'The Jesus-Eating Cult of Rick Santorum,' is bigoted and unacceptable" they claim. They say it is a "perfect example of 'flame-throwing, name-calling, and simplistic attack dog rhetoric.'"
Let's consider flame-throwing... The American Family Association (AFA) is saying that President Obama has started an “all out war on Christians” making them choose between "Life and good … or death and evil.” This as a result of merely offering contraception coverages to women via insurance. (TheNewCivilRightsMovement.com)
Or perhaps a little attack doggery... A priest at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland refused communion to a woman at HER MOTHER'S FUNERAL because she is a lesbian and "in the eyes of the church, that is a sin." He also never finished the service, walking out during the daughter's eulogy and never returning. Some, obviously don't see that as a dog attack. In a letter of apology from Reverend Barry Knestout, he called it "a lack of pastoral sensitivity." (Lez Get Real)
So, it is ok for the Church and the AFA to be complicit in bigotry... could certainly think of a few names to call on that one.

Protect the Definition of Marriage
That is what the Catholic Bishops want to do. There are some things wrong with that vow, however. First, what is the definition of "marriage"? "According to the Cain Lanamna, which is the Ancient Irish text dealing with marriage" there are several definitions of marriage, and "that marriage is contractual and it is set at a certain number of years before the contract lapses." So it is a contract. (Lez Get Real)
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, then, want to protect a contract that will expire. "There is a difference between civil marriage equality and religious marriage." But, the USCCB wants everybody to live by the definition - their definition - of a religious marriage, and if you ain't a good Catholic, you can't get married.
Makes one wonder, though, if the Catholic church also wants to set the definition of pedophilia. "Roman Catholic church's pedophile investigator jailed for possessing thousands of child porn images" was a Joe My God Headline of the Day. The father-of-four was responsible for children's safety at 120 churches and community groups for nine years. And police found 4,000 child porn images on his church supplied computer.
Hmmm... what will the church try to define next???

Oh the (Not So) Friendly Skies
Earlier this week, an actress was "kicked off" a Southwest Airlines flight for an "excessive" display of affection to her girlfriend. She and her girlfriend were reportedly kissing. While being escorted from the plane, the stewardess informed Leisha Hailey that SWA was a "family" airline and the multiple complaints from other passengers prompted the kicking off. (LezGetReal.com)
That does sound a bit homophobic and just a tad hateful. What kind of "family" doesn't like to see kissing? The National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA) opposes any premature boycott measures against Southwest Airlines, though. They say that SWA "has strict non-discrimination policies [and] is actively working ... to enhance their policies and employee training." (JoeMyGod)
But there is still that feeling of hate. It seems to be prevalent in this world towards those who are not "straight". Even the Catholic church has a bit of hate towards people in same-sex relationships. Timothy Dolan of New York, the head Archbishop, yelled at President Obama for not defending the Defense of Marriage Act. He says it would "precipitate a national conflict between church and state of enormous proportions." He reiterated the feeling that "traditional marriage is best for society." (USAToday.com)
And Gay Marriage is horrible? And probably two girls kissing on a plane is icky?
The Archbishop rants about the "conflict between church and state" but where oh where is that "separation" that is supposed to be there?

Maybe they should check with the followers
As we all are probably aware, the Catholic Church doesn't like gay people. Archbishop Silvano Tomasi told the United Nations Human Rights Council that "the Roman Catholic Church deeply believed that human sexuality was a gift reserved for married heterosexual couples." And they shouldn't be made to tolerate homosexuality. (LezGetReal.com)
But a recent poll has determined that "a large majority of American Catholics — 71% — support civil marriage equality for same-sex couples... and 74% believe that same-sex relationships should be accepted by society." (TheNewCivilRightsMovement.com)
Somewhere along the line the Head Honchos in the Vatican lost touch with their followers. Maybe 71% will become Recovering Catholics someday too...
